Bio: Yazdan Saadi was born in 1974 in Tehran, Iran, where he still lives and works. After studying graphic design and industrial design, he embarked on an artistic career on several fronts (literature, documentaries, painting …) and also endeavored to promote art brut in Iran.
In his works, Saadi mobilizes different mediums such as collage, drawing or painting. It combines elements of Persian mythology and poetry that it confronts with current social and political situations. In this selection of recent works gathered under the title “Once upon a time / Not once upon a time” (free adaptation of the “Yeki Boud, Yeki Naboud”, a ritual expression which opens the tales and refers to the marvelous), he continues his mystical narration through Persian epic characters.
In this series, we see characters inspired by epic tales placed on a typical element of the Persiana: the pages of a collection of poems by Hafez. This classic poet is still omnipresent in everyday life today and his famous collection Divan is proving to be a popular tool in trying to guess his future in Iran. If the protagonists are probably looking for the best possible outcome in the face of their tragic destiny, the calligraphy pages constitute, within the framework of this collage, a graphic backdrop to give them free rein. Supernatural and sometimes almost absurd (the head of a smiling King cut off by his wife, the head of a burning dragon, two women and a man walking upright on a horse, a two-headed horse …), these scenes of a disturbing strangeness let us imagine our own oriental and ancient narratives, those which do not really exist or which exist differently …
