Mehrin Mokhtari

Mehrin Mokhtari was born in Saveh (Central Iran) in 1959. She lives and works in Tehran. She started painting when the Revolution shut down the university where she was studying economics (indeed, all universities were closed in 1981 for 4 years). She also opened her own gallery and art school in Tehran. She is notably inspired by the political expressionism of the German painter Kathe Kullwits and followed the courses of the Iranian painter Hannibal Alkhas. She worked a lot on the figure of women before taking a more abstract approach and focusing on landscapes and nature, especially with the extensive use of the ceramic technique: she can cook and cook again ceramics until to obtain the desired shapes, including the accidents that occur during the process. Her works may seem abstract but, if we take a closer look, they are indeed very pictorial and very intimate.
